What looks like one category is actually splitting into two distinct businesses: a back-office labor replacement play, and a financial infrastructure play built for AI agents themselves rather than the humans who work in finance. Zomma, Balance, Denki, and Billow AI Labs are all versions of the same pitch, software doing the reconciling, auditing, and bookkeeping that used to sit with a Big-4 firm or an in-house FP&A hire, often explicitly plugging into existing ERPs like NetSuite rather than replacing them. But Archer and Locus point somewhere else entirely, building payouts, stablecoin banking, and payment rails for a workforce and economy made up of AI agents rather than people, which is a bet that the customer of finance infrastructure is about to change species. Lending sits in between, with Proximitty, Levocred AI, Zolvo, Kita, and Rapidfolio all converging on document-heavy underwriting and portfolio monitoring for commercial and emerging-market credit, a segment that's messier and more regulator-exposed than plain bookkeeping, which is probably why so many of these are only reaching real deployment in 2026 rather than 2025. It's notable that this formation, at 2.30x, is actually growing slower than its own parents, "Finance and Accounting" at 2.91x and "Finance" at 2.83x, suggesting the automation layer is currently being outpaced by broader appetite for AI in finance generally. None of this was practical before general-purpose models could reliably read unstructured filings and operate existing software interfaces directly, a capability that only became dependable enough for regulator-grade use once computer-use and document-parsing agents matured through 2024 and 2025.
