The twelve companies here split cleanly into two camps that rarely get named separately: physical hardware that pulls carbon out of exhaust streams or thin air, and software that measures where carbon already lives inside a company's operations. Remora, Seabound, Heimdal, and AirMyne are all building capture machinery for trucks, ships, and the atmosphere itself, betting that regulation and tax credits like the ones Heimdal cites make sequestration a paying business rather than a cost center. The other half, CarbonChain, Unravel Carbon, Carbonfact, Aklimate, and Canopi, never touch a molecule of CO2 directly; they exist because supply chains generate emissions data faster than anyone can audit it by hand, and Carbonfact's focus on apparel or Aklimate's supplier-data-for-tools trade shows how narrow and industry-specific that accounting problem has become. Abatable and Pina Earth sit in between, building the market infrastructure, procurement and forest certification, that lets the hardware side's captured carbon and the software side's measured reductions actually get bought and sold as credits. This formation is accelerating at 2.15x now largely because corporate disclosure rules tightened through 2022 and 2023, pushing carbon accounting from a voluntary sustainability report into something closer to financial-grade compliance that software alone can't verify. The tension worth watching is that the hardware companies need years of capital and regulatory patience to scale tonnage, while the software companies can grow revenue quickly just by riding disclosure mandates, meaning the accounting layer may outpace actual physical removal for some time.
