The most telling thing about this batch of YC investment platforms is how few of them are actually building for the generic retail investor anymore. Amal Invest and Female Invest carve out identity-based niches (Shariah-compliant screening, women's financial literacy), Botin and Fello target geography-specific gaps in Latin America and India, and Stock Unlock and Bloom sell education as the product rather than trading itself. Meanwhile a second, quieter cluster is building the plumbing rather than the storefront: Formance offers open-source financial infrastructure, VantedgeAI and Aqua pitch AI agents and automation for institutional-style alternative assets, and Coinrule automates trading rules across crypto and stocks. That split between consumer-facing niches and back-end infrastructure suggests the category has stopped competing on "let anyone buy stocks" and started competing on who gets ignored by Fidelity or Robinhood, and on who handles the operational mess behind more exotic assets. It's worth noting this formation's 3.22x growth actually trails the broader "Asset Management" formation at 3.77x and "Investing" at 3.30x, meaning the infrastructure and asset-management layer around these apps is expanding faster than the consumer apps themselves. Much of this became viable once large language models turned "explain Shariah compliance" or "summarize this ETF's risk profile" into a cheap, on-demand feature after late 2022, letting small teams bolt real advisory-grade functionality onto otherwise thin apps.
